- The former loads the driver into memory, and the latter configures the MSCDEX.EXE program to interact with the driver, thus allowing the user (me) to access the CD-ROM drive. However, a problem has occurred.
- It's best to let Windows install device drivers automatically. But if Windows can't find a driver for your device, you can look for a driver on the device manufacturer's website. Driver updates are often available in the support section of such sites.

CP/M:. Amiga: If you know more old software resources not listed, please share! I recently added a beautiful old machine to my collection, a Gateway 2000 486DX2-66v. After a bit of work, I managed to get Windows 95 installed on the machine, and everything in Windows is working fine, even the sound card. But I can't get MS-DOS mode to recognize the CD-ROM drive at all.
Here's the complication: the mobo has only one IDE port, and there are two hard drives attached to the cable there. (I'd like to keep both drives in the machine if possible, they're both only about 300MB and the extra space is nice to have.) So I have to use the IDE port on the sound card. The card itself is an ESS 1868F, identical to the one described here: The CD ROM drive that I've put in this machine is a typical Mitsumi IDE drive, x4 speed. Now, in order to enable the IDE port on the ESS card, you have to have a particular driver (ES1868.com) loaded in config.sys. That's done and done.
I'm not really sure how to configure the port, though. The sound card itself uses they typical Sound Blaster settings (A:220, IRQ 5, DMA 1, etc.) but for enabling the IDE port the config program gives the options of IRQ 9, 10, 11, or 15 and addresses 170, 168, and 1E8 (?!?). There don't appear to be any jumpers on the card itself that involve any of these settings. And no combination that I've yet tried of either MSCDEX.exe or SHSUCDX.com with any driver that I've tried (not oakcdrom.sys, not uied.sys, not sbide.sys.) has been able to recognize the drive.
After booting and running the autoexec.bat, I just get a message like 'no drive found, cannot install' or 'no valid drive, install aborted' (depending on which cd rom redirect program I'm using). Plz. First off, connecting a HDD to the sound card won't work, they don't support that.
Second, using the sound card requires a sound-card specific driver, so the NECIDE or OAKCDROM drivers won't work. So you need the ESS CDROM driver, and then mscdex.exe. You'll put the ESS CDROM driver in config.sys (no other cdrom drivers needed!), and mscdex in the autoexec.bat.

Also, if it's like the SB CD Driver I use on my AWE32, you'll need to tell the ESS CDROM what port address to use. If you have 1 IDE Channel on the motherboard, you want ESS to be channel 2, if you have 2 channels, than channel 3, etc. The DOS Setup program should do all that for you. EDIT: Further research it seems ESS does it weirdly, try this: CONFIG.SYS DEVICE=ES1868.COM /A:168 /I:A DEVICE=VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:168,10 AUTOEXEC.BAT C: WINDOWS ESSCFG.EXE /A:220 /I:5 /D:1 /E:0 /B:330 /J:D C: WINDOWS ESSVOL.EXE /V:8 /L:8 /W:8 /M:0 /C:8 /S:8 /A:8 c: dos MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /V If it STILL doesn't work, you could also try asking on Vogons. Well, I'm at work for the next eight hours or so, so I can't answer that one yet. I can tell you that it works just fine right now in Windows 95. The Windows driver for that particular sound card automatically enables the IDE port.

But as to testing the drive in DOS. The cd drive is jumpered Master at the moment, and it was a serious PITA to get it into the case in the first place. So I'm probably going to have to unplug both hard disks, plug the end of the IDE cable into the cd drive, and boot the machine up with a boot floppy (the Win98 disk has the oak technologies driver on it). I'll check on that later tonight.

Short answer to this: yes, it worked fine. First I tried booting from a Win98 boot floppy with the the cd rom drive jumpered master and the only IDE device connected.
The 486's bios freaked out a little bit for not seeing a hard drive, but once the computer booted 'with cd rom support', the oak driver loaded and read the cd drive as drive D. So then I jumpered it slave, reattached the main hard drive, and tried again; this time mscdex.exe and oakcdrom.sys worked as predicted, the cd drive recognized as drive D: in dos as well as windows. So at least the computer is usable this way. But I'm still a little miffed that I have to give up on a second hard drive (at least until I find a bigger one that I can swap in for the 300MB one being used now). Ah well, I guess that's that.
Nope, that loads just fine. And as near as I can tell, there is no.sys driver to go with it; the.com file is supposed to enable the IDE port on its own. The error occurs when the cd rom driver itself (like oakcdrom.sys) loads. The driver can't see the IDE port and doesn't assign a drive (a line appears to the effect of 'no drive detected'), and when it sends the drive name (MSCD001) over to MSCDEX, it's not pointing at anything and so MSCDEX returns a second error ('cannot find driver MSCD001, install aborted'). Note too that when I start the machine with a Win98SE boot floppy, and I select 'start computer with CD ROM support', it cannot see the cd rom drive then either, with similar results.
(Later tonight, though, as per PhoenixVA's suggestion, I'll try this again with the drive attached to the mobo.). The only other thing I can think of trying is to see if there are any command line switches for the es1868.com that can go with it in config.sys (maybe in the readme file?) or to see if you can find another driver online for DOS. Heck, maybe even seeing if you can find drivers from another card manufacturer that uses the same IDE controller. Kind of a long shot, but I have the same desktop computer but with a similar but different setup with a Sound Blaster Pro card with proprietary CD ROM drive and controller which wasn't the standard 40-pins. When I first got this machine, there were two sound cards in it - a Microsoft Windows SoundSystem card, and an 8-bit ISA sound card of some kind with only a single audio jack in the back and three proprietary cd-rom ports on the card (the typical Sony, Mitsumi, and Panasonic). The Mitsumi and Panasonic ports are 40 pin, just like standard IDE, but the Sony port is 34-pin. And the cd drive that actually came with the machine was a sony drive using this connector.
Since this little sound card didn't have any labels, and even the FCC id didn't turn up anything on a google search, I figured I'd never find drivers for it. So I pulled both cards and the old proprietary drive and swapped them for what I had lying around-the ESS sound card and what I had assumed was a standard IDE mitsumi drive (the date of manufacture says 1998 on the drive, so what could be the chances that it's some weird proprietary drive?). Still, I guess it's a possibility, so another test I'll have to perform tonight is, try another drive. (Especially if the drive I have in there doesn't work when connected directly to the mobo.).
For anyone still having this issue, give this a shot: First, make sure you have iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support Installed. Go to Device Manager 2. Locate your Apple device (mine was under Portable Devices.
It's very possible it's somewhere else for you.) 3. Right click it and select 'Update Device Driver.'
Navigate to C: Program Files Common Files Apple Mobile Devices Support Drivers and select that folder 5. The driver should install and you'll see 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver' under the 'Universal Serial Device USB Driver' section in Device Manager. I hope I was able to help anybody who is still having this issue. For all guys who are dealing with the problem about AMDS driver, I come with workaround. After many hours to uninstall & reinstall, execute command line, write log, etc.
That job did not help. I installed the iTune on windows 8 x64 (on 2 PCs), and iTune has not been installed before, but it still got error around the Apple USB driver missing. ( even though the PC detects the iPhone USB, but the iTune does not). Download & install Moborobo application This application installer will call downloading and installing of iTune, but it get all things done perfectly automatically once you click OK.
The problem with driver should have be solved. Other workaround, a application does not require iTune, it works awesome.
I ussually use it. The minor issue is this application which are running the Chinese language is default setting, you just click on the circle icon on top left, and move cursor on menu to change to 'English'.
Note: Please do not misunderstand, I did not PR for above applications, and I do not get anything from that, as I said, I went through many support URLs from Apple site and Microsoft, but they did not help, and I found above solutions. I've installed both of application, but I think you just need one of them.
