I purchased my TomTom XL back in March or April 2011 and just today installed TomTom Home and tried to enter my activation code for Lifetime Maps. Before I entered the code I updated everything until there were no more updates. When I tried to enter the activation code I was told the code is still valid however, it is not working because my TomTom is not up-to-date.
Well TomTom Home says it is. Here is the info when I go into the system info for the TomTom: App 9.061.576030.2, OS 567329 Map USA, Canada, & Mexico P v845.2670 Please let me know what is wrong. They will have you do a few tasks with the gps but they will finally just manually set your account up for lifetime map updates on your gps. 866 486 6866 Monday - Friday: 7:00 a.m.
To 11:00 p.m. EST Saturday: 9:00 a.m. EST But before you do any updates it is a very good idea to create a backup of the memory in your gps. Here is a link for that procedure. Also never lose you activation code. You may have to use it again if something gets messed up with your account information. TomTom will not issue you another one if you lose it.
So put it in a safe place. You are going to have to contact customer service.

You can buy a upgraded map at the TomTom online shop: target='blank' title='This website opens in a new tab in the browser Select your device from the dropdown menu, choose the map which has the same name as the installed map on the device. Click on the 'buy now' button. Follow on screen instructions to complete the purchase.
Its also possible to buy a mapupdate subscription to receive 4 new maps a year (this is valid for a year). Go to the following website if you wish to buy the mapupdate service: target='blank' title='This website opens in a new tab in the browser On the image at the top of the website there are two 'buttons', it has the title 'The world is constantly changing'. Click on the 'Update your map' image to receive a personalized offer in TomTom Home. The map will be upgraded first to the recent map (v8.75) before you are able to use the mapupdate service. The additional cost is calculated on how old the map is onto your device. Purchased my XXL 540 - 2gb last year in about april, with Lifetime maps. The activation code worked well.

Updated the Maps several times, got a new map the next time they came out. THEN, TomTom Home gave me an error, to solve it, was instructed to delete TomTom folders on my Computer. Next time that I tried to update to new maps, it said I had to pay for them. Took out my activation code to use it, and it said that it could be used only once. Now have not been able to update to new maps of US and Canada since then. The real problem is that all TomTom tells the buying consumer is 'lifetime maps and traffic edition' on the outside of the box. He or she does not get to open the box until after the puirchase.
I am the owner of two of the TM edition XXL's. I have their original boxes. But after a year I do not have the code card.

It is deceptive to sell a unit advertised with 'lifetime maps' and then force a consumer to pay for a map update in order to be eligible to download lifetime map updates. The update should be tied to the unit's serial number, not a code card which can be misplaced or accidentally thrown away. Just another opportunity to sell TomTom's vastly overpriced maps. Hi, I can assure you that for newer devices there's no code on that card any more as the lifetime map updates are indeed linked to the serial number.
Still it is worth keeping this card especially as it says in bold letters DO NOT DISCARD!!! Therefore you should automatically keep that card and you shouldn't need to pay for any map for those devices. Sometimes CS also accepted a picture of the box saying that it is a lifetime map device to activate the service. I recommend making several pictures of the box including the sticky with 'lifetime maps and traffic', including the serial number printed on the box and a picture of the device showing the serial number. That way you should also be able to reactivate the lifetime maps.
